Exilio

After nearly 25 years members of Exilio have left home – carrying the flame of hope to new communities.

Our story started in the basement of Above Bar Church in the early 1990’s where a group of young people dreamed of a different sort of church. A place where everyone was welcome – especially friends who wouldn’t darken the door of a more traditional church.  Shortly after, Waterfront Church was born.  It began meeting in the Novotel near the station with a heady mix of music, drama, theatrical lighting and video to support the Bible teaching – an approach that was almost unknown in other churches at the time.  After nearly 20 years Waterfront morphed into Exilio – and began to reach out with community projects – projects we hope to continue into the future.  Since those early days so much has happened, including many traditional churches now being a lot more contemporary!

In the summer of 2016 a number of the Exilio church family came to the conclusion that their work in Exilio was done and their gifts would be better used by spreading out and serving in other local churches.  The last Gathering of Exilio was held on 11 September 2016.
The decision to stop being a local independent church was not easy, but  right from the start we have been committed to growing and going – and we sense this is another part of that journey.

So the church moves on and the flame of the good news of Jesus continues to spread out.
